What is the best material for boxing gloves?

There are different types of boxing gloves on the market, and each type of glove is suitable for different scenarios. So we give them different names: sandbag gloves, training gloves, sparring gloves, competition gloves, Mexican boxing gloves, Muay Thai gloves, etc. When choosing boxing gloves, we need to clarify our purpose. Meanwhile, we should also take the material into account. The following is an introduction to the materials of boxing gloves.

Outer material

The outer material of boxing gloves is generally divided into three types: PU, microfiber and genuine leather.

PU material is light, comfortable and cheap, and is the choice of many non-professional boxers.

Microfiber is wear-resistant, soft and breathable, and is the material favored by many boxing gloves manufacturers.

Genuine leather is featured by its better quality and durability, so it is more expensive. On the other hand, if properly maintained, leather gloves are definitely more durable than any other material currently used. Compared with other materials, genuine leather is usually strong, flexible, and can control sweat and odor well. Professional boxers and people with sufficient budget are more inclined to choose leather boxing gloves.

Nylon and polyester are also some common choices. Boxing gloves made of these materials are usually lightweight and breathable, making users feel comfortable. However, nylon and polyester gloves are slightly inferior in terms of protection and durability.

Liner material

The liner materials mainly include horse hair, compressed sponge, EVA foam material, latex, silicone, etc.

Horse hair liner is less chosen because of its high hardness and almost no elasticity, which is very painful to hit. Maybe you don't know that horse hair is a traditional filler that was once widely used in boxing gloves. However, as time goes by, the concept of animal protection has gradually become popular, and with the emergence of other more modern and eco-friendly filler materials, the use of horse hair in boxing gloves has gradually decreased. Nowadays, horse hair filled gloves are rare and mainly appear in retro or collectible gloves.

Material such as compressed sponge, EVA foam material, latex and silicone have better cushioning and shock absorption effects, which can reduce the impact on the hand. Some high-end or professional-level boxing gloves are designed with multi-layer fillers. Although multi-layer filler gloves are relatively expensive, they are usually more durable and can withstand high-intensity training.
