Boxing at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Paris 2024

Boxing is an event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be held from July 27 to August 11, 2024.

Preliminary boxing matches will occur at Arena Paris Nord in Villepinte, with the medal rounds (semifinals and finals) staged at the Stade Roland Garros.

The exact origins of boxing are unknown, but some of the earliest evidence comes from Sumerian artifacts found in present-day Iraq, dating back to 3000 BC.

Boxing was introduced to the ancient Olympics in 688 BC when boxers used soft leather straps to tie their hands and forearms to protect themselves.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, boxing disappeared for a time until it re-emerged in England in the 17th century.

Modern amateur boxing can be traced back to 1880.

At first, boxing competitions had only five weight classes: bantamweight (no more than 54 kg), featherweight (no more than 57 kg), lightweight (no more than 63.5 kg), middleweight (no more than 73 kg), and heavyweight (any weight).

Boxing at the Olympics has a special set of rules. Only amateurs are allowed to compete, which means the Olympics are often the launch point for the illustrious careers of some of the sport's biggest names, including Muhammad Ali.

However, the situation is less clear for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday it might consider removing boxing from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if it cannot find a suitable international body to regulate it

This can be backdated to June 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) barred the International Boxing Association's (IBA) rights to run and organize the tournament due to "continuing irregularity issues in the areas of finance, governance, ethics, refereeing, and judging"

Therefore, it is still uncertain whether there will be boxing at the next Olympic Games. We need to pay attention to the latest developments and decisions of the International Olympic Committee.
