Mouth guards are designed to fit over the occlusal surfaces of the teeth and gingivae of the maxilla or mandible. They are recommended in amateur boxing, due to upper maxillary being the most common location of injury during competition.
Unlike stock mouth guards, the double mouth guard boxing is known as Boil and Bite (B&B) mouth guard-Mouth formed or Boil & Bite guard made of a thermoplastic and they can be molded to the athlete's teeth and gingivae after immersion in hot water. It require the athlete to apply suitable pressure to mold appropriately.

How to Fit a Mouthguard
1. Place the mouthguard in warm water (60-75 degrees) for about 10-15 seconds until it softens.
2. Once it softens, place the mouthguard on the upper teeth in your mouth.
3. Bite down for 30 seconds (Don't bite too hard).
4. If the mouthguard fits your mouth, it is a success.
5. If not, you can start again from first step.

Whilst Boil & Bite mouth guards are molded to the individual athlete, the quality of the fit is determined by the technique of the individual. Previous studies of boil and bite mouth guards have shown that they inhibit athlete's ability to talk, are subject to discomfort. In order to reduce discomfort during training and competition, athletes may consider wearing mouthguards for a period of acclimatization and using break periods in the sport such as between rounds, tactical stoppages or during half time to remove the mouthguard when not needed.
